Terrapin K9 Academy believes that obedience training is about two species, human and canine, discovering a new language together. Dogs do not comprehend any of the spoken languages devised by humans and nor, for that matter, do humans fully understand the body language dogs are proficient in. That leaves a large gap in communication, a gap that must be filled with some mutual understanding. We are here to help seal that gap. Together with you and your dog we will work towards the goal of developing a new way of "talking" to each other. Discovering the language that is obedience means improving your relationship with your dog, and what could be better than that? At our school we utilize a vast range of methods to achieve the goals we set out. We do not believe that training has to be done purely one way. In fact, we are unique in that we look at each individual dog, his family and his situation closely before deciding which methods might work best. We use everything from clickers to remote training collars. With over 15 years of experience working with dogs in a training capacity, we have deeply explored many different training techniques and come to the conclusion that no one technique is better than the next. It is the situation, the level the dog is at, the preferences of the owner and a vast range of other circumstances that decide which tools would be best suited for each scenario. We look at the WHOLE picture and then decide what methods to use. In the beginning all obedience training should be fun for the dog. In fact, obedience should be a game, something the dog enjoys immensely. Ultimately, obedience is about the relationship you share with your dog, and we are here to help you bring that relationship to its highest level.
